CHAPTER 12

“Aren’t you taking the kids to see the angel tonight?” Ryan asked.

After dinner, with reluctant help from the boys, Barbara finished cleaning the kitchen. Instead of urging them to hurry with their homework so the four of them could traipse downtown and see the angel one more time, she sat on the couch next to Ryan.

“I think I’ve been enough times already and besides, I know I’ve been neglecting you.” She ran the back of her hand down Ryan’s cheek.

He caught her hand in his and squeezed. “Marrying you was the best decision I ever made.”

“I feel the same way.” Her smile was downright flirtatious. “Tell me about your day, sweetheart.”

“You heard about the arrest of the man who exposed himself to female joggers at the beach, didn’t you?”

“Of course, silly. The officers’ wives spread the news way before you made your TV announcement.” She cuddled even closer to him. “By the way, you’re getting so good at these TV spots I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if one of the network news programs didn’t offer you a job. You’re much better looking than any of their newscasters.”

“And you’re a bit prejudiced.” Ryan laughed but couldn’t help wondering if she was buttering him up for some reason.

“Were you as surprised as we were that Councilman Blandly is the guilty party?” Barbara scooted closer to him.

“I think everyone was surprised. He always came across as such a narrow-minded twit. He never listened to an opinion that didn’t agree with his. Never had anything good to say about the police department either.”

She giggled. “That’s because he was always afraid if the city hired more police officers they’d have the time to catch him when he was running around in nothing but an overcoat.” Barbara squeezed his knee. “Poor Stacey. That must’ve been a sight to behold.”

Without him giving her any of the details, it sounded like Barbara had already heard everything about the arrest—a perfect example of the wives’ network.

“She said the sight of his naked body was so disgusting she didn’t recognize him until they brought him into the station and she had time to think about him.”

“Yes, all the wives have been giggling over the thought of him. The pompous man would be even more humiliated if he knew he was the subject of our gossip.”

Amazing, the women seemed to have ferreted out all the juicy details. “With the arrest and everyone knowing about his perverted behavior, I doubt if he’s worried about what the police officer’s wives are saying about him.”

Barbara snuggled closer. “What’s going to happen to him?”

“He’ll spend the weekend in county lock-up. Once he’s seen a judge, he’ll probably get out on bail. What will happen after that is anyone’s guess, but I suspect, along with his prior record, his days as a councilman are numbered.”

“With him gone, maybe the council will consider pay raises for the department.”

“Would be nice.” He thought a moment before adding, “Though I have no reason to think any of
